This volume contains valuable contributions of participants to the First France-Romanian Conference on Optimization, Optimal Control and Partial Differential Equations held at Iasi, Romania on 7-11 September 1992 in the above field and its applications. The main areas tackled in the research works were the following: variational method in mechanics and physical models, the controllability of infinite dimensional and distributed parameter systems, the H° control problem, the dynamic programming method and optimal control, optimal control of nonlinear partial differential equations and mathematical programming and nonsmooth optimization. This was a new occasion to give emphasis to the ability of Romanian mathematicians to a very pleasant cooperation with French mathematicians and not only; this scientific contact was a good opportunity for the mathematicians to contribute to the new social developments in East Europe. Thanks to the remarkable scientific level and to the especial importance from the social and political point of view, we recommend this collection of research papers to all the research workers in the above topics.
